The Primary school joined the worldwide advocacy campaign organized by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), an international coalition of non-governmental organizations and teacher unions in supporting children, youth and adult literacy and lifelong learning.
The reading initiatives held during this week at school were intended to send a strong signal on the importance of literacy and literate environment. UNESCO’s key messages on the right for education for all were addressed by raising awareness that literacy is a basic right. A power point presentation highlighted the fact that literacy is a fundamental condition for being part of today’s knowledge societies, and a key to reduce poverty and increase development. The school community became aware that worldwide, millions of adults lack literacy skills, millions of children are out of school and millions more leave school early without acquiring basic literacy and numeracy skills. The school realized the need for more commitment, more effective literacy programmes and more funding to make literacy accessible to all.

Our Year 6 pupils read out children’s stories to the Kindergarten pupils and their parents. Mime and poetry recitation from Year 3 and Year 4 teachers and pupils respectively amalgamated the printed word with the rhyming sounds and actions. The ‘Big Book’ sessions were implemented by the junior classes while the senior ones read excerpts from a collection of short stories written by one of the local but prominent authors.
Importance was also given to writing skills with the children making their own books, formulating reports, letter writing and other genres of writing. Information technology was effectively utilised by the pupils to present their works in school displays and publication on the school newsletter.
World Book Week with a purpose gave the school a vision and a mission for its activities. Literacy could be the key to improve the quality of life of many people. The school enriched itself through reading whilst contributed to a meaningful cause of Education for All while ensuring quality education in practice.
