As from this year Maltese state schools have been equipped with LEGO Mindstorms NXT. The first impression is that LEGO is intended for young children. Well with Mindstorms, things are different. Amongst the array of pieces in each set there is an assortment of sensors that react to light, sound, touch, and even one for measuring your presence via a pair of ultra-sonic “eyes”. The models are assembled quite easily but every creation is unique. Programming the robots is not for the faint-hearted but students can program them with the help of their teachers. One of the innovations of the NXT is the use of either USB or Bluetooth to communicate back to the PC.
GoAnimate is a web-based software where a teacher can easily create cartoons for their blogs or sites. However, with a little twist of imagination and animation, one can engage students to create anything related to their subject. Could this be an alternative way to present work? Maybe not but the teacher has to cater for students who detest the subject. It could be the key for involvement.

It is not an easy feat but the support and peripatetic teachers help both secondary and primary colleagues by delivering out courses during the summer, winter and professional development sessions. More news about eLearning can be found here.

A social bookmarking site allows the user to store lists of Internet resources that they may find useful. This might sound similar to the Favourites/Bookmarks available through your web browser. The difference is that such lists may be available through any Internet connected PC. Also these lists may be set as accessible either to the public or to a specific group, and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.
