The bilateral project between Malta and France ‘The Other Side of the Coin’ has made it to the European eTwinning Awards finalists! This project was between Mr. Mario Xerri’s class at Gozo College Girls Secondary School and Ms. Claire Nevot’s class at Collège Jean Vilar from France. This project had also won first price in Malta’s National eTwinning Awards and an Innovative Project award in France. To know more about this project you can see a review of it on our blog.
The Malta National Support Service would like to congratulate Mr. Mario Xerri for his work and wish him good luck for the final round!
Yesterday my article iPads in Education has created a mini-debate and my email box was bulging more than usual. So after this interest I quickly googled to delve deeper in this issue. In one particular website, there was a writeup about a survey “What do Students Think of Using iPads in Class? Pilot Survey Results“.
EmbedPlus is a web-service that can help teachers share YouTube videos more effectively and it allows users to seamlessly and freely upgrade video embeds with attractive features that the standard YouTube players does not currently offer … features like scene skipping and 3rd party annotations would be useful for marking up lecture, demo, and experiment videos – even for videos not created by the teacher. Similarly, slow motion and movable zoom can offer needed accessibility for some students and video events.
The professional development of last year introduced Engrade to teachers. Are you using Engrade? Engrade makes it easy for parents, teachers, and students to communicate and stay in contact.
A recent article in The New York Times website (NYT, 2011) states that “As part of a pilot program, Roslyn High School on Long Island handed out 47 iPads on Dec. 20 to the students and teachers in two humanities classes. The school district hopes to provide iPads eventually to all 1,100 of its students.”
But why use iPads in schools?
1. iPads are occupying a new niche in education which might become significant over time. It is an area between small screen smartphones and heavyweight laptops or netbooks.
2. They can help to personalise learning. Today the modern trend is one-to-one and the iPad could play an important role here. Continue reading ‘iPads in Education?!?!?!’
During the “PlayStation Meeting 2011″ which was held earlier today in Japan, Sony have unveiled their new, upcoming portable device (which as you can see in the photo below looks very similar to the PlayStation Portable), which will be temporarily known as NGP (Next-Generation Portable).
Creating online polls is as easy as ABC. There are many free online polls which can be created and easily embedded in a blog or site.
I think placing a survey or poll on your classroom blog or website is a great way to get informal feedback from your students. A survey can be placed on a class blog every week or so before any formal assessment. That feedback helps the teacher identify the areas that any students need more help and or clarification on.
During 2010, Algodoo software was introduced in selected secondary schools. It was a pilot project for Physics lessons. Schools and students were exposed to this software during EMBED 2010. During the July and September INSET, Physics teachers were given a brief speech of Algodoo and how this software could be integrated in their lessons.
As from this year, Algodoo has also been introduced to primary schools. Mr.Jeffrey Zammit and Mr.Ray Bonnici, eLearning support teachers, are delivering science lessons whilst using the software on the interactive whiteboards. Year 5 pupils are enjoying using this software on the interactive whiteboards.
Several primary teachers have already booked a slot for an Algodoo lesson. If there are any further Year 5 teachers who want their pupils to be part of Algodoo world, can contact us on geoffrey.zammit@gov.mt
As the internet is evolving all the time, many educators pounce on the opportunity to tap this resource. Unfortunately there are some teachers who have not fully realised the great potential of the internet. Choosing to sit back and wishing it would go away is not an option. One should embrace the idea of this great tool by attending courses such as the ones offered by the eLearning centre.
