eTwinning Project of the Month – Happy Minds Strong Bodies

by Ms. Patricia Bondin and Ms. Janet Mifsud, St. Thomas More College, M’Skala Primary

The theme for our eTwinning project for the current year is entitled Happy Minds Strong Bodies. To develop this project we teamed up with collaborators from Poland, Greece, Portugal, Lithuania, Turkey and Romania. This vast and open ended phrase led us to introduce our children to happy and appealing ideas together with a healthy living atmosphere.

Kids learn from kids

This is what I understand by e-LEARNING. Everyone should have a look at this. Here is a fundamental difference between e-teaching and e-learning. The focus is on technology that empowers the learner.

Interactive Geography

I found this simple map where students can drag the names of countries over the respective map location. Quite frankly there are many similar sites. The point of all this is teachers should use them especially if they have internet and an interactive whiteboard. Year 5 classes do have these two, so they are able to have some fun here.

Ergonomics

Today most students and teachers devote a part of their life in front of their computer. For this reason today I am going to post a video dedicated to ergonomics. What’s that? The video just explains it.

Painting and Threading Macaroni at Gozo College Ghajnsielem Primary

This activity was a part of our FOOD & DRINK topic for this month. Kinders 1 & 2 both participated. Our aim was to promote and develop the tripod and pincer grasp and for them to acquire skill and concentration using hand and eye coordination and also to learn new technology by using the Tuff Cam. The objectives of the activity were fully met and the children all had fun mixing colours together, painting, threading and taking photos. But the highlight of this activity was when they wore their beautiful necklaces and took it home to show mum and dad what they did. Well done kids!!!

‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ - Mellieha Primary

new-picture

In April, Year 1.2 of Mellieha Primary School had the opportunity to make use of the Photostory Software to present the story of ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’. This was shown to the rest of the school during the special assembly. As a follow-up of the story, the pupils also animated the song ‘Best Friends’ by Alvin and the Chipmunks. The pupils with the help of the teacher and LSA worked hard to give a good performance and it was well applauded and appreciated. A display of the masks and children’s work related to the story was put up in the school corridor.

Free Biology books

Today many would argue that textbooks and books are not valid for todays’ world. Maybe so because books get oudated even before they are printed. Today the technology is allowing every individual to have access to the latest online information. The following links are free biology links suitable for secondary classes. There might be other online books which are better than these. But why grumble? They are free.

Food for thought

Each day I read numerous ICT and eLearning topics. It is impossible for me to give all the links every time I encounter a new article. I always focus on web tools or ideas on how to support teachers. However the following article left me for a couple of minutes pondering. Here is a quotation from the same article:

Our intentions might be the best, but teachers in Norway are still struggling to find areas where they can make use of ICT to enhance learning. I think this is mainly because the pedagogy (in most cases) hasn’t changed at all. It’s still very teacher-directed, and when you try to introduce computers into a classroom where textbooks and the standard question/answer cycle are the norm, you most likely will encounter problems. In the same classrooms where teachers lecture and use PowerPoint presentations, students are using Facebook, YouTube and Skype.”

Food for thought indeed.

Animation

Another tool for those who love art especially on interactive whiteboards. This is a very simple tool where students can draw anything. Each frame can be slightly modified so when all frames are viewed in a fast motion, it creates the animation effect. Quite simply it is like recalling the old Disney days when cartoons were created. Using this tool is fun and involves creativity. Give it a try. Click HERE to try it out.
